The Office of Academic and Student Affairs (OASA) at the School of Information supports students in achieving their academic goals by facilitating student recruitment, enrollment, academic success, retention, and graduation.
We accomplish this by:
Aligning our work in support of the overall School’s mission and the mission of the University
Helping students connect their academic life and their student life in a holistic student experience
Providing excellence in services as we work with prospective and current students; as well as alumni, faculty, staff, and university colleagues
Fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students in our diverse community
Focusing on the needs of students as we strive to work effectively as a team and seek continuous improvement in the services and programs that we offer
Creating and implementing best practices from multiple professional fields that guide our work including Higher Education and Student Affairs, Appreciative Advising, Enrollment Management, and Student Development
The Office of Academic and Student Affairs is led by the Assistant Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, and is organized into divisions including:

UMSI Student Organizations:
You can review the UMSI student organizations on the UMSI website.
UMSI has a robust student organization community. All student organizations connected to UMSI are considered “UMSI-Recognized Student Organizations.” This group includes Sponsored Student Organizations (SSOs which are UMSI’s student governments by program and Voluntary Student Organizations (VSOs which are all other UMSI student organizations.)
Student organizations may be interested in collaborating with or being co-advised by UMSI faculty. All new student organizations must first become recognized through UMSI Student Life. Before taking next steps to discuss formalizing new student organizations or becoming a co-advisor for an existing student organization, faculty and interested students should email UMSI Student Life (umsi.studentlife@umich.edu) to request a meeting.
The Student Life Program Manager will be the official advisor for all UMSI-Recognized student organizations
Faculty can choose to become an additional advisor for a student organization or serve in an unofficial consulting capacity.
Faculty should consult with UMSI Student Life before agreeing to advise or start a new student organization. There are specific compliance guidelines and best practices that must be reviewed with UMSI Student Life in order to proceed as a student org co-advisor.
Faculty should not sign a Sponsored Student Organization (SSO) agreement. This process is managed by UMSI Student Life.
