Clinical Track Faculty
Clinical Track
The following titles may be used for clinical appointments: Clinical Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, Clinical Assistant Professor, or Clinical Instructor. There are also Adjunct Clinical titles which are addressed under the Adjunct Track.
New Faculty Hiring (Clinical)
Candidates for clinical faculty can be identified through a published search or through informal methods. Candidates for clinical positions will be interviewed by the faculty and make a public presentation. The hiring process follows the same procedure as detailed for tenure-track faculty. UMSI criteria for hiring and promotion of Clinical Faculty can be found here.
Clinical professorial ranks are hired as university year employees and their appointments begin either August 31 or January 1. In university year appointments, professorial faculty are paid for the academic year i.e., September through May and they are paid for these 9 months over a 12-month period (July through June).
Clinical Track Appointments
The Regents’ Bylaws (Section 5.23) describe the roles and responsibilities of clinical faculty. Further definition of the rights and responsibilities of clinical faculty, not inconsistent with the Bylaws of the Board of Regents, may be addressed by the bylaws of the academic units.
Appointment Information
Clinical appointments, reappointments, and promotions are recommended by the appropriate instructional unit and school, college, or division and are approved by the appropriate Provost or Chancellor (Flint or Dearborn) and the President.
Those faculty who are appointed at one-half time or more and who have appointments for one or more years may request to become governing faculty and will be so appointed after a majority vote of the governing faculty at the School (See U-M Bylaw Chapter V, section 5.01: The Faculties and Academic Staff). Such voting privileges will be restricted to non-tenure-related matters and hiring decisions outside the tenure track (UMSI Criteria for Hiring and Promotion of Clinical Faculty).
Summer Salary
Clinical professorial faculty are eligible to receive additional summer salary during June, July, and/or August. Summer salary is not the default, but can come from various sources depending on the work commitment of the professor. Some obtain sponsored grants to conduct research and often those grants will pay salary for one or more summer months. Sometimes faculty will receive salary from UMSI general funds for extra service they perform for the school, or as compensation for teaching an overload in another semester. Recently, the university updated the standard practice guide explaining the limit on the amount of summer salary faculty can receive from various sources. Any exceptions require the approval of the dean. Please read this policy carefully if you have additional summer funding: http://spg.umich.edu/policy/201.04
Promotions and Reviews
Per the Regents' Bylaws (Section 5.23), "Appointment and promotion criteria shall be consistent with those for the regular instructional staff to the extent applicable." As such, for relevant promotion and review material (including the FAR), please consult the promotion and review materials for tenure track faculty, third year review page in this handbook, and the hire and promotion criteria handout for Clinical Faculty.
