Course Management at UMSI

Syllabi Information

UMSI requires all faculty to include the following statements in all syllabi.

The most up-to-date text can be found Canvas UMSI Teaching Resources site.

Final Examination Administration

The Final Exam Schedule and policy is posted on the website of the Office of the Registrar.

For undergraduate courses, UMSI follows this schedule and policy. For a cumulative (e.g., evaluating student performance over materials taught over the entire semester), scheduled final exam, teachers must use the time designated by the UM Registrar. An exam that is not cumulative may be held during a regularly scheduled class time.

Exams for UMSI graduate courses do not follow the regular university exam schedule. School of Information final exams will be held during exam week on the same day and time as your regularly scheduled class. The same room will also be used, unless you require additional seating space. Take-home exams are another option though they cannot be due during university study days, and of course, some classes do not have a final exam at all.

No exams may be given during university study days. Exams cannot be given early, even if not on a study day, per university policy.

Religious Holidays

Annually the provost posts information regarding religious holidays and academic conflicts. Faculty should consult this policy for guidance and a list of affected dates annually.

Waivers

In certain cases, students may request waivers from required or prerequisite courses based on previous coursework or experience. Waivers are processed by the Office of Academic and Student Affairs. Some courses also have established testing procedures for students to demonstrate knowledge and competency. These waiver exams are administered before registration for students. Any questions can be sent to umsi.registrar@umich.edu

Course Fees

Instructors who anticipate course related expenses must go through an application and approval process to determine whether a course fee should be imposed on the students. By doing so, the fees will be collected through the university central receivable system, along with tuition. A message will be sent to faculty three times a year requesting information regarding course related expenses.

Due dates to submit paperwork are:

Fees of less than $25.00 cannot be collected. Once lab fees are established, they continue to be assessed to students as long as the associated class is held. For expenses that are a necessary cost of instruction that do not exceed the $25.00 per student threshold, a special request must be submitted to the central registrar's office. Faculty will then be notified of approval of those expenses.
