International Teaching Resources & Opportunities
International Teaching Resources and Opportunities
International Education Priority Areas
UMSI seeks to expand its international education program offerings for BSI, MSI, and MHI students. Priority considerations include:
Teaching new or existing UMSI courses at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute in the summer (May through August)
Faculty have the option to teach a full or half course (with another UMSI faculty member)
Faculty would be employees of the Joint Institute
See the current curriculum
Applied and immersive project-based learning courses for MSI and MHI students in the summer (similar to the former GIEP)
Other areas of interest:
Short-term courses (3 to 12 weeks) for BSI, MSI, and MHI students in the summer, with a focus on:
Novel classes (SI 311/511)
Lower-level courses that do not have prerequisites
Faculty members who can commit to teaching internationally more than once (ideally, three or more iterations) will be given higher priority consideration.
Submit Interest in Teaching Internationally
Faculty interested in teaching abroad can share their interest with the ELO at any time at https://forms.gle/nc3GwzZUpGJ1EKz99.
It is suggested that interest be submitted twelve months before the proposed travel dates to allow for the program development and recruitment cycles. Members of the UMSI faculty from all tracks are welcome to submit an interest in teaching abroad. Those who share their interest will be contacted within a week to discuss the next steps. Not all submitted ideas will be pursued.
All submissions must be reviewed and considered by the respective degree committee; new courses must go through the formal course review process. Concurrently, the interested faculty member would work with the ELO Director and the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs to determine specific details of teaching appointment allocation, remuneration, etc. View the Provost’s Office “Guidance for Developing an Instructor-Led Study Abroad Program” guide and the UMSI Short-Term Global Engagement Guide for more information.
Faculty with relationships at international academic institutions that may be interested in partnering with UMSI are encouraged to contact the Engaged Learning Office to explore partnerships.
Those with questions or who would like to explore this topic further can email umsi.engagement@umich.edu to connect with relevant staff.
