Lecturer Track Faculty

Lecturer Track

The following titles may be used for lecturer appointments: Intermittent, Adjunct, Lecture I, Lecture II, Lecture III and Lecture IV.

UMSI employs Lecturers of all ranks. These non-tenure-track instructional staff play an important role in advancing the university’s education mission, teaching a wide range of courses on all three university campuses. All lecturers are part of the Lecturers' Employee Union (LEO), American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Local 6244, and subject to the terms of a collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and LEO. This agreement sets our review timelines.  The current agreement is in effect from 2024 through 2028.

New Faculty Hiring  (Lecturer)

Lecturer hiring at all ranks will be coordinated by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs following the guidelines set forth in Article XXVII of the LEO Agreement.

Details on Appointments

Intermittent  Lecturers

Intermittent lecturers are those who teach for UMSI on a course-by-course basis. They teach one or more regularly occurring courses as an ongoing part of the academic curriculum, but typically one (1) semester per academic year.  There is no requirement for any additional duties or responsibilities beyond teaching for Intermittent lecturers and submitting a Faculty Annual Report (FAR, see below) mandated by the LEO contract.

Adjunct Lecturers

A University employee who holds a regular non-instructional title at 50% or greater and who is appointed to teach a course or courses may be appointed in an adjunct title.  There is generally no requirement for any additional duties or responsibilities beyond teaching and submitting a Faculty Annual Report (FAR, see below) mandated by the LEO contract.

Lecturers I and II

Lecturer I and II appointments are primarily for the teaching (and its related duties) of assigned courses. There is no requirement for any additional duties or responsibilities with these appointments. Lecturer Is can be appointed by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, usually for a specific teaching assignment. Candidates for these part-time lecturer positions will generally be interviewed by the ADAA, who then makes appointment decisions. The LEO contract mandates that all lecturers must submit a Faculty Annual Report (FAR) once per academic year during years they are not going up for review.  Lecturer Is can be promoted to Lecturer IIs during their scheduled review process as stated in the LEO contract and UMSI policy.

Lecturers III and IV

A Lecturer III and IV appointment is for an ongoing position that includes instruction and significant ongoing administrative or service duties within UMSI or as assigned by the UMSI. Lecturer IIIs are appointed/approved by the dean, usually for a full-time teaching and service load. The LEO contract mandates that all lecturers must submit a Faculty Annual Report (FAR) once per academic year during years they are not going up for review. Lecturer IIIs can be promoted to Lecturer IVs during their scheduled review process as stated in the LEO contract and UMSI policy.
