Emeritus Track Faculty
Emeritus Faculty
Regular and clinical instructional faculty, research professors, research scientists, librarians, curators, and archivists may, upon retirement, be granted an emeritus or emerita title by the Board of Regents.
Faculty who wish to be considered for emeritus status should begin working with the UMSI Human Resources (UMSI HR) office at least four months prior to their expected retirement date.
Emeritus and emerita faculty shall be regarded as members of the university instructional and primary staff who have retired and as such are entitled to attend without vote meetings of the University Senate, to march in positions of honor in academic processions, to receive the University Record, to avail themselves of the library and other facilities offered to university faculty members, to represent the university on appointment at academic ceremonies of other institutions, and in general to take part with the faculties in all social and ceremonial functions of the university. (Regents By-laws Sec. 5.20. Emeritus and Emerita Faculty (revised April 1995) (http://www.regents.umich.edu/bylaws/bylaws05b.html#14)). A full list of these entitlements and rights is listed in the University of Michigan Faculty Handbook issued by the Provost (http://www.provost.umich.edu/faculty/handbook/19/19.K.html) and the Standard Practice Guide (SPG) 201.80 Emeritus/Emerita Titles. As stated in SPG 201.8 III.D,
UMSI generally provides emeriti/ae faculty with shared office space, and may provide use of laboratory space, secretarial, or other services on a limited basis (as available).
"...emeritus/emerita faculty members may request approval for continued use of their accumulated research funds for expenditures in support of new research or creative work if they have active and productive programs of research underway at the University of Michigan, and the dean and department chair or the vice president determines that the expanded activity warrants support due to its value to the University” (see Section 5e) http://www.provost.umich.edu/reports/discretionary/policy_statement.html
