Appointment Processes for Temporary Employees

Hiring Temporary Employees (student and non-student)

You can submit a request to hire a student using this link

No one may begin working before they have been properly processed by Human Resources. Be aware that everyone who is not currently a UM employee requires a criminal background check which takes approximately two weeks. Employees also cannot start working until they have filled out the I-9 form which is the authorization to work form.

Information that HR needs to hire temps:

1)      Name

2)      E-mail Address

3)      Suggested Job Title and/or Brief Job Description (if known or applicable)

4)      Hourly Pay Rate

5)      Short Code or Project Name

6)      Desired Start Date

7)      Number of Work Hours Per Week

8)      End Date (estimated)

If you don't know whom you'd like to hire, UMSI HR can help you post a position but UMSI HR will need a couple of weeks' notice if at all possible.

Note: International students cannot work more than 20 hours per week (combined with all appointments) when they are enrolled in classes.

Hiring Minors

Although UMSI is allowed to hire minors, there are many additional steps to be taken so please consult with UMSI HR as soon as possible.   Please review the following Standard Practice Guide, and the SPG Policy,  for more information about how this can work.

REU Student Participants

REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) is a research opportunity for undergraduates through NSF’s REU Program.  The stipend paid to REU student participants is not a salary or wage for work performed. It is a traineeship, a form of student aid (like a scholarship or fellowship) provided to support a student’s education/training in a STEM field.   If you would like to hire a student using REU funds please refer to this document.
