Student in Crisis

Responding to Emergencies and Students in Crisis
At times, you may encounter a student in the midst of a crisis and may want to know the best way to handle the situation. Especially if something happens outside of business hours, it is good to have these numbers handy to make sure you have the resources you need. For emergencies, please support the student in getting help via the contact numbers below.
911; For any emergency or safety situation
734-763-1131; For non-emergency safety issues, call the UM Division of Public Safety (DPS recommends you have this number programmed into your cell phone)
734-764-8312 (24-hour line); For a student needing urgent mental health assistance, UM Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Students can call (734-764-8312) or stop in (Michigan Union 4th Floor) to request same-day urgent/crisis support during CAPS normal hours. For urgent/crisis needs when CAPS is not open, students can access CAPS After Hours
734-996-4747; For the after-hours Psychiatric emergency number at the UM Hospital
734-936-3333 (24-hour line); For the UM Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center which provides a wide array of supportive services for survivors of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, stalking, sexual harassment, and gender-based harassment
Although student emergency situations are rare, it is good to be prepared. If you do encounter a student in an emergency situation and refer them to help with the numbers above, please also report what happened via the UMSI Student Care Report and follow up with any other questions/concerns to umsi.academicsuccess@umich.edu and/or the UM Dean of Students Office at deanofstudents@umich.edu so that we can continue to follow-up with the student as needed.
If a student reports issues of sexual harassment or misconduct, please offer them support and ensure they have knowledge of campus resources. Both the CAPS and SAPAC offices are confidential offices, where students can work with counselors confidentially. Both offices can provide support to students in a variety of ways, including helping students navigate options for academic or employment concerns. Faculty and staff who work with students or who lead areas such as HR, are required to report issues of sexual misconduct/harassment. You can learn more about sexual misconduct reporting and resources at https://sexualmisconduct.umich.edu.
Students reporting incidents of bias can be referred to Assistant Dean Judy Lawson at jmlawson@umich.edu and/or Devon Keen at devaca@umich.edu, Director of Inclusion, Equity, and Outreach. Another opportunity for students to report a campus climate concern is online at ExpectRespect.umich.edu. Additional details on DEI feedback and reporting can be found here.
UMSI Student Care Report (Non-emergency referral)
Please submit the UMSI Student Care Report if you are aware of a UMSI student that needs additional support for a non-urgent concern, including but not limited to academic difficulty, well-being concerns, tutoring support, and/or connection to university resources. The UMSI Academic Programs and Student Life (APSL) Team will work directly with the student to provide appropriate support resources. If you have any questions, please email the APSL Academic Success Team at umsi.academicsuccess@umich.edu. The form and email address are monitored during normal business hours, and the team will respond to you within one business day. Also, during business hours, you can refer or directly bring a student in distress to the Office of Academic and Student Affairs (Collegain Building, 333 Maynard Street, Floor 5) and someone will see them as quickly as possible.
Laura Elgas and Katy Peters can be additional contacts for students in all UMSI programs as well as students outside of our college. They can be cc'd at any point (lauramb@umich.edu and katross@umich.edu). To reach Laura after hours in follow-up to an emergency, please call 248-787-6401 (Laura Elgas cell).
