Although student emergency situations are rare, it is good to be prepared. If you do encounter a student in an emergency situation and refer them to help with the numbers above, please also report what happened via the UMSI Student Care Referral and follow up with any other questions/concerns to umsi.academicsuccess@umich.edu and/or the UM Dean of Students Office at deanofstudents@umich.edu so that we can continue to follow-up with the student as needed.
If you are a witness to or experience conduct that discriminates, stereotypes, excludes, harasses or harms you or any person in our community based on an identity (race, ethnicity, national origin, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, age, work status, or religion) we encourage you to speak with someone and to file a report of your concerns with the university. The UMSI Office of Organizational Culture and Community staff are available to discuss these incidents with UMSI community members. Their team can listen without judgment, discuss options, and recommend next steps and resources based on specific concerns. You can send an email to umsi.occ.contact@umich.edu for support. Community members can also report a campus climate concern at ExpectRespect.umich.edu.
If a student reports issues of sexual harassment or misconduct, please offer them support and ensure they have knowledge of campus resources. Both the CAPS and SAPAC offices are confidential offices, where students can work with counselors confidentially. Both offices can provide support to students in a variety of ways, including helping students navigate options for academic or employment concerns. Faculty and staff who work with students or who lead areas such as HR, are required to report issues of sexual misconduct/harassment. You can learn more about sexual misconduct reporting and resources at https://sexualmisconduct.umich.edu.
Please submit the UMSI Student Care Referral if you are aware of a UMSI student who needs additional support for a non-urgent concern, including but not limited to academic difficulty, well-being concerns, tutoring support, and/or connection to university resources. The UMSI Academic Programs and Student Life (APSL) Team will work directly with the student to provide appropriate support resources. If you have any questions, please email the APSL Academic Success Team at umsi.academicsuccess@umich.edu. The form and email address are monitored during normal business hours, and the team will respond to you within 1-2 business days. Also, during business hours, you can refer or directly bring a student in distress (non-emergency) to either of the below locations and someone will see them as quickly as possible:
North Campus: UMSI Student Affairs and Career Center (2260 Leinweber)
Central Campus: UMSI Central ( 777 N. University Ave. above Panera)
