Promotion and Tenure
Promotion and Tenure
The faculty of the School of Information at the University of Michigan seeks to be a community of scholars in which the use of creative intelligence is rewarded. In making decisions on the retention and advancement of members of this community, the major criteria are excellence in research, teaching, and service. The usual expectation is that achievement in these areas is sustained throughout the period of time under review, but special consideration can be given to unusual accomplishments with high impact.
In each of these areas the candidate is asked to provide a summary of his/her goals, accomplishments, and most significant contributions. In addition, input on all areas is requested from faculty colleagues, students, administrators, and external reviewers.
The P&T Committee
The Promotion and Tenure Committee consists of Professors and Associate Professors with tenure. Associate Professors with tenure who stand for promotion to Full Professor will reviewed by a promotion and tenure committee consisting of only Full Professors, i.e., faculty will not be reviewed by those in their own rank.
No later than the commencement of the seventh year of an Assistant Professor appointment, the School’s Promotion and Tenure Committee will review the faculty member for tenure and for promotion to Associate Professor, with tenure, and make a recommendation to the Dean as to whether to send the case forward to the Provost’s Office. Normally, the review for tenure and promotion takes place during the sixth year in the rank of Assistant Professor; earlier review can be undertaken on the recommendation of the Dean's Advisory Committee (DAC) to the Dean, and with the consent of the candidate.
Each year the DAC will review the status of all Associate Professors and recommend to the Dean whether to review the Associate Professor for promotion to Full Professor in the coming year. A promotion review from Associate to Full requires the consent of the candidate. There is no specific year in which a promotion review is mandatory; it is common for such reviews to take place in the sixth year after promotion to Associate with tenure, but there is also much variation depending on the circumstances and progress of the faculty member.
Promotion and Tenure Review Processes and Guidelines
UMSI’s requirements for materials and the required casebook format are driven by the Provost’s “Promotion Guidelines”, which are a definitive statement of policy and practice to which UMSI must adhere (all research, clinical and tenure-track appointments, promotions and tenure decisions must be recommended to the Provost).
