Courtesy (joint) Faculty Appointments
Courtesy Appointments
Several of our faculty have joint appointments in other Schools and Departments at the University of Michigan. Some of these appointments are funded by those other units and some are “courtesy" or "dry” (e.g., 0%) appointments. Joint appointments are very common at the University given the multi-disciplinary research and collaboration that takes place. UMSI typically has a number of faculty jointly appointed in other units; in recent years this has included joint appointments with public policy, economics, computer science and engineering, psychology, political science, linguistics, complex systems and public health.
Faculty with 0% appointments are members of the UMSI faculty, represent us in their interactions inside and outside the university, and are entitled to various privileges associated with holding a faculty title in the School. Thus, it is the policy of the School that such appointments should be granted conservatively, and that they should entail clear expectations about the amount and type of participation in the life of the School.
For further information see the full UMSI Policy for Courtesy Appointments (Approved by the Governing Faculty December 11, 2013).
