UMSI offers alternative testing support and scheduling options for UMSI courses, tailored to meet individual student needs. Faculty are encouraged to utilize the Testing Workflow for Instructors document to determine what pathway is best suited for alternative testing:
Pathway 1: Student Needs Academic Accommodations
Faculty are encouraged to utilize the U-M Testing Accommodation Center (TAC) first to support students who need academic accommodations, especially those requiring more complex support (e.g., specific technology, frequent breaks). However, when TAC is unavailable, UMSI can specifically assist with make-up testing and facilitate timed assessments for UMSI students with accommodations approved through SSD (via Accommodate). Please note that some academic accommodations may require additional support that the TAC must provide (as listed in the student's Accommodate letter) (sass.tac.staff@umich.edu).
Pathway 2: Student Needs to Make Up an Exam
If students need to make up an exam, you can request the testing assistance team to schedule a proctor to take the make-up exam, or you and your instructional team can schedule and proctor the exam directly with the student.
Review the Testing Workflow for Instructors document to determine the support you need for alternative testing: UMSI-proctored or instructor-proctored support.
UMSI Proctored Alternative Testing (supported by UMSI Testing Assistance Team)
If you need to have your alternative test proctored by the testing assistance team, please complete the UMSI Proctored Alternative Testing Request Form. You can use this form to schedule make-up and/or accommodated tests for students. After submitting the form, you will receive a confirmation email regarding scheduling and availability within one week. The team will coordinate scheduling with you and the student(s), confirm testing logistics, and ensure prompt return of completed assessments.
Please ensure you are allowing enough time to plan accordingly to best support you and your students, as it can take up to one week to schedule. We typically cannot support same-day requests.
Please note that you will be required to provide all testing materials to the location at least 24 hours before the test. This includes printed exams and any provided materials for your class (ex: scantron, Blue Book, etc.). Our team does not print exams; they must be printed and dropped off at the specified location.
Instructor Proctored Alternative Testing (supported by Instructor/Instructional Team)
If you plan to provide a proctor, you can reserve space in:
Graduate courses: Reserve space via the Instructor Proctored Alternative Testing Sign Up Sheet in LCSIB 5533 or review available spaces via Robin
Undergraduate courses: Review available spaces via Robin for UMSI Central and UMSI Collegian
All-Level Courses: If you need bigger classrooms for support, please email umsi.registrar@umich.edu for support.
Faculty can utilize their instructional teams (IA, GSI, Instructors, etc.) to proctor and schedule their own exams. Utilizing the Robin system and sign-up document can help faculty reserve their own spaces for proctoring.
UMSI Alternative Testing will be facilitated on both North Campus and Central Campus. Graduate-level course testing will be held in Leinweber and Undergraduate course testing will be held in UMSI Central. Our team will coordinate with students accordingly, but in most cases, these will be the assigned locations.
Please note that you will be required to provide all testing materials to the location at least 24 hours before the test. This includes printed exams and any provided materials for your class (ex: scantron, Blue Book, etc.).
